A rechargeable battery, storage battery, secondary cell, or accumulator is a type of electrical battery which can be charged, discharged into a load, and recharged many times, as opposed to a disposable or primary battery, which is supplied fully charged and discarded after use. It is composed of one or more electrochemical cells. The term “accumulator” is used as it accumulates and stores energy through an electrochemical reaction. Each cell consists of electrodes, separated by an electrolyte. When the battery is in use (discharging mode), the electrodes undergo an irreversible chemical reaction that results in one electrode being oxidized and the other being reduced.
Rechargeable batteries come in many different shapes and sizes, ranging anything from a button cell to megawatt systems connected to stabilize an electrical distribution network. Several different combinations of electrode materials and electrolytes are used, including lead-acid, nickel cadmium (“nicad”), nickel metal hydride, lithium ion polymer, lithium ion (including lithium titanate), and zinc-air batteries. Some rechargeable battery types are available in the same sizes and voltages as disposable types (for example: 9-volt), but others are not (for example: most cellphone batteries).
