MXL is a well-known microphone company. They make a wide variety of condenser microphones. One of their specialties is vocal mics.
The MXL 990 is probably the most popular MXL microphone. It’s a somewhat unique design in that it has an “FET preamp” and a “tube circuit” which are supposed to give it a sound more similar to the classic tube mics of days gone by. The FET preamp is actually a field-effect transistor, which is an electrical component with some interesting properties that aren’t quite like either resistors or vacuum tubes (probably more like the latter).
Condenser microphones contain a small, back-electret element that works as part of an electrostatic capacitor. Most condenser mics use this element to produce electricity, but many MXL mics use it as both a generator and an amplifier.
The MXL 990 is unusual because it has this type of dual configuration. In some ways, it’s similar to what you might find in other tube microphones, except that its tube circuit works at much lower voltages than you would find in those designs. This gives it a very low noise floor, and makes it useful for high-quality vocals.
