What to look for in Best Laptop For Arch Linux
Arch Linux is a free and open-source Linux distribution for computers based on x86-64 architectures. Arch Linux is known for its simplistic approach and is typically made for Linux pros, but this doesn’t mean that Linux newbies cannot use it.
It can be installed on any laptop which supports UEFI booting since version 170627.
There are a few things that you should consider before buying a laptop to use with Arch Linux.
1. Processor
Processor: You should have an Intel processor, preferably one of these: Intel i5-5200U, i7-5500U, i7-6500U.
If you can find a laptop with one of these processors, it has the potential to be a good laptop for Arch Linux. However, there are many other aspects to consider in addition to the processor.
There are also some things you shouldn’t do. Stay away from these older processors: Intel i7-4810MQ or i7-4700MQ or i7-4610M or i7-4510U.
2.GPU
GPU: The graphics processing unit (GPU) is a system on a chip that performs computer graphics operations. It is a dedicated circuit designed to perform certain tasks faster and better than the CPU. GPUs are designed to perform calculations to display images on the screen, but they can also be used for other types of mathematical calculations.
3.RAM
RAM stands for Random Access Memory and is used to store data that is in use by the CPU. It is volatile, meaning any data stored on it will be lost when the power is turned off. RAM is usually measured in gigabytes (GB).
RAM amount can be upgraded after purchase up to a certain limit, but it’s important to get at least 4GB of RAM as anything less slows down your computer. Keep in mind that RAM is often the most expensive component of a computer and you will want to set a reasonable budget for it.
4. Storage
Now that you’ve narrowed it down to a laptop from a reliable brand, the next step is to think about what you’ll be using your new machine for. Are you running more simple programs like Word and Excel, or are you creating media files? If you’re into making music, editing videos, and gaming, it’s best to go with a laptop with plenty of RAM. You should also take note of the storage capacity. This can be broken down into two categories: SSD (solid-state drive) or HDD (hard drive disk).
A solid-state drive functions like a computer’s hard drive. It stores all of your data and makes sure everything runs smoothly on your machine by allowing quick access to important information. A regular HDD can’t do this; as such, it’s best used when storing large files only as needed—think documents and pictures in addition to applications installed on your system.
While there are pros and cons for each type of hard drive (SSD vs HDD), most laptops have dimensions that require smaller SSD drives because they’re thinner than HDDs so they won’t fit in the same slot. If a laptop has an SSD option with higher capacity than the standard model offers (say 500GB instead of 250GB), then we’d recommend going for that version since it will help save some space on your machine but not break the bank either way.
5. Battery Life
The battery life is a very important factor. Although it may seem rather obvious, it is not an easy task to find a laptop that can run for an extended period of time. It depends on the power consumption of your machine, but you should at least get 5 hours out of your battery if you are into streaming or gaming. You do not want to forget about the screen resolution, as well as the number of cores on your processor.
As for web browsing and office work, a few hours is more than enough. However, if you are planning to use your laptop as a portable media centre you definitely need more time off the grid than someone who only uses their device to surf the internet.
As expected, battery life has a direct correlation with size and weight: smaller laptops usually have less powerful components but this means they also consume less power overall
Conclusion
In this post, I have tried to list some of the best laptops you can use with Arch Linux. I hope this list will help you to find the best laptop for Arch Linux.
I would be happy to hear your suggestions and opinions on this topic.
