The Pixelbook Go is available with a choice of Intel processors: an entry-level m3 or a more powerful i5 and i7. My review unit came with an Intel Core i5 processor. It has 8GB of RAM plus 128GB of local storage — the same amount I’ve recommended for mainstream laptops for years.
I didn’t notice much of a performance difference between my Pixelbook Go and the original Pixelbook, but these newer laptops come with faster solid-state drives that improve boot speed, app loading and file copying. The base model also starts at $649, which also happens to be $100 less than the Pixelbook’s starting price two years ago– although it’s worth noting that the newer laptop has a lower-end m3 processor instead of an i5.
Still, this is one of the best Chromebooks you can buy right now. It outclasses competitors such as Samsung’s Chromebook Plus ($449) and Lenovo’s Flex 11 ($321), both of which feel slower and less capable overall. To reiterate, this is a great laptop, but it is not a gamer’s laptop. It has some serious limitations on games because of its lack of RAM and poor graphics card. I have tried to play GTA V on it and the game kept crashing. It sometimes crashed after loading in the menu and sometimes crashed within minutes of starting the game. On top of that, when the game did decide to load and run, I had significant lag issues for 1-2 minutes at a time every couple of minutes. This was beyond frustrating because even though I wouldn’t consider myself a “gamer”, per se, I still like to play some games here and there as a way to decompress from work/school or just to spend time with friends who live across the country. If you are someone who plays video games on your computer frequently (or even occasionally), this model will be limited in what it can actually run for you without running into significant issues or just simply being unable to run at all; if you want something more powerful so that you can play video games with ease, look elsewhere!
