If you’re not a gamer, don’t dismiss the Dell G3 15 3500 because of its gaming branding. It’s really just an inexpensive general-purpose Windows laptop with a little extra oomph in the graphics department.
The G3 has many of the same attributes as a Chromebook, but runs Windows 10 instead of Chrome OS and is significantly more powerful. The $629 configuration we tested includes an Intel Core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM, 256GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD and Intel UHD integrated graphics.
The G3 can’t compare to premium thin-and-light laptops like the Dell XPS 13 or MacBook Air, but given its price, it doesn’t have to. The G3 offers strong performance for basic tasks and some multitasking power, plus a decent feature set and battery life that blows away similarly priced Chromebooks. And if you ever want to play light games with it, you’re covered there too.
The Dell G3 15 3500 isn’t a terrible value at its regular price of $729 — it’s just not particularly impressive either. However, student discounts (available both on Dell’s website and via student discount programs at other retailers).

The Lenovo IdeaPad 5 is a great everyday laptop packed with some premium features, including a fingerprint reader, a backlit keyboard and long battery life. It’s also reasonably priced at $699.99, considering the powerful 10th Gen Core i5 CPU and 16GB of RAM. But if you want to pay less for better performance, there are other options out there.
The IdeaPad 5 has a 15.6-inch full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS panel that provides an average viewing experience. When I watched the trailer for The King’s Man, I noticed that Kingsman star Taron Egerton looked a bit pale when compared to his more vibrant attire. On a positive note, the movie was sharp enough to let me see the pores on Egerton’s face during close-ups of his character.
However, the screen isn’t particularly bright or colorful. With an average brightness of 267 nits, it falls below the 300-nit category average and doesn’t stand up to competitors like the Acer Aspire 5 (286 nits), Asus VivoBook S15 (319 nits) and HP Envy x360 13 (351 nits). The IdeaPad 5’s display also provides an unimpressive 72% coverage of the sRGB color
