This is an extraordinary lens. It’s sharp, fast, light and compact. The Sony 24-70mm f/4 is also a great value as a kit lens for the Sony A7 series of cameras.
I’ve had this lens for a few months now, and I’m extremely pleased with the purchase. I have not felt any need for the faster, heavier and more expensive Zeiss 24-70mm f/2.8 or Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 G Master lenses. In fact, I find the smaller size and lighter weight of this lens to be superior to those other lenses in many situations!
This lens is very sharp in the middle all the way through the zoom range (with some minor corner softness at 70mm on full frame). The autofocus speed is excellent and it’s accurate as long as you’re not shooting wide open or in low light. The OSS works great, which makes it possible to shoot handheld in many situations that would be difficult with other lenses. With that said, this is not a replacement for an ultra wide angle zoom or a macro lens – it’s a general purpose prime-like zoom that does everything well but nothing perfectly.

The 28-75mm lens is a very intriguing option for anyone who’s looking to get into the world of full-frame mirrorless cameras. It’s a fast prime, with a maximum aperture that drops from f/2.8 at the wide end to f/4.0 at the telephoto setting.
The lens’ independent stepping motor AF system is quite impressive, and it’s extremely quiet even when working in video mode. The aperture ring has a lot of resistance to it, which means that you’ll need to be sure your finger is on the ring when you’re changing settings.
As is common with modern lenses, Tamron includes a lens hood with this model. The hood also gives you something to hold onto while shooting since the lens doesn’t have a finger grip or handgrip of any kind.
